It was actually Steve Van Doren, son of one of the brand’s founders, who noticed that teen skaters in the 1970s had started coloring in their Vans by hand to create a checkerboard effect. The company embraced the trend and championed its wearers’ spontaneous creativity by designing fabric in the same style. Fast forward five decades and the Vans checkerboard print is one of the most recognizable brand signatures out there, gracing everything from shoes to bags and hats.
